Oil Prices Slide as Traders Doubt OPEC Deal
By Nicole Friedman, Summer Said and Benoit Faucon
Oil prices slid Tuesday amid growing investor skepticism about the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' ability to reach an agreement to limit production.
OPEC members are meeting this week through Wednesday in Algiers to discuss coordinated action to lift oil prices, which have been hammered in recent years by a persistent global glut of crude.
But Saudi Arabia's energy minister said Tuesday that the group is working to reach a deal to freeze production at its November meeting and that no agreement would be announced this week.
U.S. crude oil fell $1.26, or 2.7%, to $44.67 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent, the global benchmark, fell $1.38, or 2.9%, to $45.97 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe.
