Asahi Kasei studying expansion of S-SBR complex in Singapore

Asahi Kasei Corp. is studying the feasibility of expanding capacity for solution styrene butadiene rubber (S-SBR) plant in Singapore, the company says. Asahi Kasei Singapore Rubber, a subsidiary, already operates two S-SBR plants there with a combined capacity of 100,000 metric tons per year. The first line came onstream in 2013, followed by a second identical plant two years later. Asahi Kasei is considering adding 30,000 metric tons per year or more in Singapore using its own technology, which the company says is unique from other S-SBR processes.
Asahi Kasei’s current S-SBR capacity is 240,000 metric tons per year. In addition to Singapore, the company operates plants at Kawasaki and Oita, Japan. The Kawasaki facility is designed to produce 105,000 metric tons per year and Oita 35,000 metric tons per year. Demand for S-SBR, used in energy-saving green tires, is growing, the company says. Singapore has no tire manufacturing facilities, and output from Asahi Kasei’s plant is shipped to other Asian countries, Europe, and America.
