DJ Oil Prices Climb as Production Capacity Falls
By Nicole Friedman and Georgi Kantchev
Oil prices climbed Monday on expectations that a drop in U.S. production would help shrink the domestic glut of crude.
Light, sweet crude for October delivery settled up $2, or 4.5%, at $46.68 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Brent, the global benchmark, rose $1.45, or 3.1%, to $48.92 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe.
On Friday, oil-services company Baker Hughes Inc. reported a drop in the number of rigs drilling for oil in the U.S., the third straight weekly decline. The falling rig count demonstrates how producers are continuing to cut back on new drilling following the downturn in prices.
U.S. crude production has dropped from a peak of 9.6 million barrels a day in April to 9.1 million barrels a day in August, according to the latest estimates from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The agency expects production to hit a low of 8.6 million barrels a day in mid-2016.
