Asahi Kasei says that its Asahi Kasei Chemicals (AKC) subsidiary will increase production capacity for hydrogenated styrenic thermoplastic elastomer by 30% at its production site at Kawasaki, Japan, with start-up scheduled for June 2016. Hydrogenated styrenic thermoplastic elastomer is used as a modifier to make polypropylene flexible while still transparent, and needs are growing for flexible material to substitute polyvinyl chloride (PVC), especially in medical applications, Asahi Kasei says. Demand for this application has been growing in recent years, particularly in Europe and China. AKC has already moved to meet this growth, increasing production capacity for hydrogenated styrenic thermoplastic elastomer at Kawasaki by 20% this spring.
